Butoh 50 Years: A New Vision?

Links Hall and Blushing Poppy Productions

Butoh legends Hiroko and Koichi Tamano are coming to Chicago for the first time for a 5-day workshop culminating in a performance at Links Hall. The Tamanos studied for more than ten years with Tasumi Hijikata who sent them to the US to bring Butoh to the West.  Their company Harupin Ha Butoh Dance Theatre was named by Hijikata meaning those who dance Butoh will achieve an awareness of being alive.

The Tamanos have lived in Berkeley since the late 70s and have paved the way for the first generation of American Butoh artists.  They plan to retire later this year and return to Japan where the emperor has declared Koichi a national treasure.

The Tamanos will set one of their pieces on the workshop participants to perform with them on Monday, October 25.

15 Artists will perfrom with the Tamanos in one of their last performances in the US.
